Bowel movements, is a subject that is considered gross therefore not up for public discussion but it should be. Because it’s not; a large quantity of sick Americans isn’t aware their bowel movements are the unknown factor to their health issues. It’s unfortunate the information we receive from Traditional doctors, the website and Alternative Medicine doctors all conflict. Though they have their differences about how often the bowels can go without moving, when someone should be concerned, when someone is considered constipated and the available treatment options, they do all agree it’s important for the bowels to move on a regular basis, that constipation can become a life-threatening problem and Colon Hydrotherapy is an acceptable, FDA approved, form of treatment for constipation.
A sluggish bowel and constipation is not just an adult issue anymore. In the past a child coming in for a colon session was unheard of but now we are receiving calls for children on a regular basis, and hearing of an increase in temporary colostomy surgical procedures due to constipation.
Why Pooping daily is important.
- The health of your entire body is dependent on your colons continuous conveyor belt type movement of your poop out of your body.
- Not pooping contributes to several health issues, the development of serious diseases, surgery or colon related cancers and death.
- Poop is the trash your body did not use and needs to be emptied several times a day. Our best example of a person with a healthy colon is a baby. As you notice they poop every time you feed them not because they are being difficult but because their Digestive System is still healthy.
- Poop is emptied through a large muscle called the colon/large intestines which is a part of the Excretory System of not just humans but of every living creature.
- Excretion is the natural, essential physical process of eliminating waste products from your body and one of the five major ways the body detoxes/cleans itself.
- Your digestive system contains more bacteria cells than there are cells in the body and contains 70% of the cells that make up your immune system, so it’s important that it stays healthy. It is said that the colon is the most important part of the body because life and death both originate from the colon. Hippocrates (the ancient Greek Physician) also known as “the father of medicine said, “All diseases start in the colon”.
Thousands of people are affected and even dying every day because of colon related issues. Gas, Bloating, indigestion, Diarrhea, Acid Reflux, Constipation, Allergies, Insomnia, Stomach & Headaches, Behavior issues, Lack of mental clarity, Fogginess, Fatigue, Sluggishness, Food cravings, Eczema, Dry skin, Acne, Rashes, Straining, Hemorrhoids, Dry, Painful stool, Impaction, Body/breath odor, Joint pain, The development of serious diseases & illnesses’ such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Diverticulitis, Ileitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Polyps, Colon cancer, Rectal cancer, the need for colostomy surgery are not issues we should just learn to live with. These are colon related health issues which share constipation as a common factor and which most could have been prevented without drugs or surgery.
If your bowels do not move regularly/everyday; you are not alone. There are a lot of available Statistics.
Here are a few:
- Pooping slowly or infrequently = constipation. According to Medscape.com Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal (GI) complaints in the physicians’ office, with a prevalence as high as 30% in select populations, and it can have a substantial impact on quality of life. Each year, this typically benign condition accounts for well over $1 billion worth of over-the-counter medications.
- More than 100 million Americans have digestive problems
- Two of the top five selling drugs in America are for digestive problems
- There are more than 200 over the counter remedies for digestive disorder.
- Constipation is a common complaint, and most people experience it at least once in their lives.
- More than 4 million Americans have frequent constipation, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases.
- More than $700 million is spent on laxative products each year in America (2). (Walk by the constipation product section in any store and you will see a variety of products from stool softeners to laxatives. What I’ve seen is the bigger the store the larger the display and it’s because this is such a major issue).
- Older Americans self-medicate for constipation more than any other physical condition (3)
- 25 % of the population over age 70 are taking laxatives at least once a month (3).
- The Digestive System is home to more cancers and causes more cancer deaths than any other organ in the body (10)
- Colon/Rectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in Men and Women (12).
Therefore, keeping your Colon healthy and moving is:
- As necessary as breathing
- As important as sleeping, eating & urinating
- As serious as a heart attack
A consistently moving colon is more Important than:
- Eyelash extensions and barber/hair appointments
- Manicures, pedicures, & facials
- Shopping, wining & dining
- A trip with family or friends
- Selective surgeries
- Various implants
- Sporting events or wine tastings
- A round of golf or a fishing excursion
How do you know if your bowels are not moving efficiently?
- It’s difficult to get your bowels to move.
- You have to strain and/or sit and wait more than a minute before your bowels move.
- Your bowels don’t move within 30 minutes to an hour of eating a major meal such as breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- Your bowels are not moving daily.
- When your bowels move it does not expel stool the length (fingertip to elbow) of your arm.
- Your bowel movements are dry, hard and sometimes painful.
- You’re having to dig it out, use laxatives, stool softeners or drink prune juice.
- You work or live somewhere, that does not allow you to empty your bowels when you feel the urge
- You no longer feel the urge to go
- Your visits to the bathroom requires air freshener, a fan or an open window and/or time to air out before someone can enter the room behind you.
Some reasons poop moves slow or does not move at all.
- Stress and stress factors such as fear, anxiety, pain, anger, abuse, etc.
- Traveling
- Aging. As we age our Digestive System naturally produces less digestive enzymes
- Lack of sleep
- Holding it
- Instead of exercising or moving the body; we sit on our jobs, while commuting, watching television, and while being entertained.
- Eating foods that contribute to constipation such as dairy (ex: milk, cheese, ice cream), caffeine, sugar, soda, bananas, peanut butter, alcohol, and gluten (if allergic or sensitive)
- Use of Enemas and overuse of laxatives
- Illnesses’, extended bed rest due to illness, anesthesia, paralysis
- Syndromes such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus and Irritable Bowel
- Diseases of the colon
- Cancer treatment, Antibiotics, depression, pain, iron, sleep, psychiatric, muscle relaxers, and some weight loss medications, Illegal drug use and marijuana consumption.
- Not drinking enough water
Why this is such a personal issue:
I offer colon Hydrotherapy because years ago I had several major health issues. When I went for an X ray for a different issue, the technician saw my colon was extremely full and asked me if I was constipated. I understood constipation to mean someone who strains or has difficulty passing their stool so in all honesty I said no; because I didn’t have that issue. What I did not know at the time was that my bowels were not moving regularly and I was indeed constipated because though it moved without difficulty, when it moved; it only moved once a month. My coworkers had no idea I was constipated. They encouraged me to consider Alternative Medicine for the health issues they knew about and when I did finally make an appointment the Naturopathic doctor sent me to have a series of Colon Hydrotherapy sessions. I still can’t find the words to express how wonderful I feel. The best I can do is to tell you that I was so impressed that after retirement I went back to school to obtain the training needed so I could give back by helping educate and helping as many people as possible achieve consistent, healthy bowel movements.

Questions you should ask & what to look for when looking for a Colon facility and a Colon Hydro Therapist.
- Are they located in a home?
- How much schooling or training do they have?
- Where did they get their training?
- Are they members of I-ACT? (International Association of Colon Therapy). Check by Emailing I-ACT at ([email protected])
- Do they provide an Open and/or Closed unit? It is important that you check this equipment out
carefully.Ask for the manufacturers name and model, so if you desire to learn more; you can do a web research. - Are their units FDA registered?
- When do they sanitize their units? They’re answer should be nothing less than after every session.
- Does your therapist do any type of massage or reflexology for the colon?
- Will they be with you throughout the process?
- Do they reuse their speculae or rectal nozzles? Do they offer to clean them for you and want you to bring them back with you on your next visit? If the answer to this question is yes; you need to know According to I-ACT; I-ACT highly recommends disposable, single-use speculae and rectal nozzles. If the therapist uses reusable speculae, the speculae has at a minimum be autoclaved for sanitation and cleanliness. PLEASE research the autoclave process. If they just rinse it or wash it DO NOT GO TO THEM AND FOREWARN EVERYONE NOT TO GO TO THEM! We only use disposable, single-use speculae and rectal nozzles.
- Go to their office and meet with them. Check to see if their facility is clean, comfortable & easily accessible. When you visit an office, remember it’s on their time, so be courteous, take no more than 5 minutes their time.
- Do they have doctors to refer patients to? Ask for the doctor(s) name and number.
- If you desire educational products and services to assist with the health and care of your colon; do they have any?
- Do they practice what they teach? Do they practice what they advocate? For example, do they tell you to not consume a large quantity of sugar, suggest you eat organic, drink your healthy quantity of water, do they have colon session themselves? Does their diet and life style correspond with what they teach?
- Do they accept medical reimbursement plans, offer payment plans or payment options?
- Do they offer to assist you in attempting to obtain a refund from your insurance company?
- What are their hours? Do they have early morning, midday, evening, weekend or emergency hours?
- What are their prices?
- How long are their appointment slots (e: 30, 45 or 60 minutes)?
DIGESTIVE HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS
Why the need?
Why digestive health supplements? Have you noticed there are more advertisements about digestive issues such as gas, bloating, indigestion, reflux, heartburn and constipation? In my local grocery store I noticed the digestive aids were not in a section but took up the entire aisle. What about your store? Had you begun to wonder why? Well…..
- Our fruits and vegetables are not grown at home and oftentimes not grown locally, therefore they are sprayed with pesticides, harvested before they are ripe and coated with waxes or preservatives to allow them time to be transported and sold before they go bad.
- Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics help the Digestive System to process/digest the food you eat and help bring and keep the digestive tract in balance, assisting with gas, bloating, indigestion, reflux, heartburn and constipation issues.
- Eating healthy doesn’t mean that your body is properly digesting, absorbing or getting the nutrients, it needs from the foods we eat.
- Vegetables are almost nonexistent in the American diet, with an increase in junk, ready-made and instant foods.
- A large quantity of the fruit and vegetable options and soon our sea food is genetically modified (GMO’s), artificially colored and flavored.
- As we age our digestive System produces less and less digestive enzymes which are needed to help the digestive System process/digest the foods we eat.
- Antibiotic use, processed foods, fast foods, ready-made/instant food, stress, and sugar consumption have all increased.
- Then there is the increased consumption of antibiotics, pain, psychiatric, stress, depression type medications resulting in an imbalance in the digestive tract, an increase in bad bacteria, a slowing of bowel movements, bloating, gas, indigestion, acid reflux, constipation and nutrients not being absorbed which all contribute to an increase in constipation/slowing or lack of elimination, all resulting in the need for digestive aids so your Digestive System can do its job which moves you toward living your healthiest life.
